The Importance of Try-outs

Hello, and I hope everyone had a great Halloween. Congratulations to the U12 Field Hockey team on winning the Harvest Hockey Championship! Today’s focus is on the importance of trying out and what coaches are looking for.

Koa’s 2015 club tryouts coming are coming up and here are a few reasons to show up, even if you do not think they will make the team.  Some parents tend to think that if they send their child to tryouts and they do not make the team that it will hurt the child’s love for the sport. Often, the exact opposite occurs it can make them want to work harder and set a long term goal of making the team next season.  It’s great to see young athletes setting goals, working hard, and achieving!  If your child does not make the club team we have plenty of other opportunities for her to develop, Koa offers a rec league as well as weekday clinics.

Having your child attend tryouts at a young age will help them in the future.  The first few times you tryout for a team you are very nervous and unsure of what is going to happen, we don’t want this experience to be at the high school level. Once you have attended a few tryouts you are more prepared for exactly what tryouts will look like and what coaches are looking for.  Here are some attributes Koa coaches, and our staff that also coach in high school deem important:

    • A positive attitude
    • Basic skills of the game (dribbling, passing, and shooting)
    • Well conditioned players and speed
    • Strength
    • Aggressive play
    • Knowledge of the rules
    • Coachable athletes
    • Athletes that are focused and ready to give 100%
    • Athletes who do not hold back
