All of us here at Koa Sports wish that everyone who celebrated Yom Kippur this past Saturday had a safe, happy holy day. All of our BABL teams were off Saturday in observance of the holiday, but we still had a full slate of travel games and another edition of Monday Night BABL, all of which were full of highlights.
Additionally, Koa would like to give a shout out to five coaches – Casey Leister, Ryan Ebert, Aidan Edelman, Noah Sherman, and Mario Arciniega – who spent all day Saturday remaking the infield, pitcher’s mound, and batter’s boxes at Richard Montgomery HS. Koa uses the fields at RM a lot for games, practices, and clinics in both BABL and travel, so the field work should benefit many of our teams. Thank you, coaches, for your hard work!

The lone BABL game came in the latest installment of Monday Night BABL, where the Changeups improved their record to 2-3 following a convincing 17-4 win over the Movers. Jonah S. was a stud on the mound, pitching three complete innings while only allowing one run. The team dominated at the plate and played much better defense, which coach Mario Arciniega has been stressing in practice. Glad to see it’s paid off.

Koa 10U vs. Sterling Xplosion 10U
Game 1: 5-2 loss
Game 2: 8-7 loss
The 10U Green Wave, coming off a hugely impressive sweep last weekend, couldn’t keep it going, dropping two close games to the Xplosion. Curtis G. was an all-around force at the plate, notching two hits in game one and another one in game two, and Evan K. pitched very well, but the team left too many base runners on base between the two games, which ended up dooming them. Despite this, a few timely hits from the Xplosion was all that separated the Green Wave from two wins, so they’ll look to bounce back next weekend and get their own timely hits.
Koa 11U vs. Loudoun South Eagles 11U Black
Game 1: 12-5 win
Game 2: 25-6 loss
A tale of two games for the 11U Green Wave. The squad too care of business in game one, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. Zach B. struck out all four batters he faced in relief, with several players recording multiple hits and walks at the plate. However, the team appeared to leave their gloves with them after the game, as they committed too many errors in game two. However, once they shore up their defense, this team should have no problems going forward.
Koa 12U vs. Kidball Cardinals Red 12U
Game 1: 12-9 win
Game 2: 12-11 win
The 12U Green Wave earned their second sweep of the season, though unlike their previous sweep, these games proved to be much closer and more competitive. After falling behind early in game one, the offense came to life late and helped the team sneak in a win. Kanen K. paced the team with three hits and four steals. In game two, the team once again had to come back. Jay W. came in and pitched well in relief, allowing the offense to claw the team back. They scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 11. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Connor B. smacked a 2-2 single to left field, scoring the game winning run! What an ending!
Koa 13U vs. Arlington Senators 13U National
Game 1: 10-6 win
Game 2: 11-7 win
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: the 13U Green Wave swept their double-header. The Green Wave got great pitching in game one out of James R., who kept the game close just enough for the bats to wake up. Patrick B. shut the door to preserve the win. In game two, Koa jumped out to an early lead and weathered a late scare to remain on top, with Miles K. keeping the Senators’ bats at bay. The team was put in great position to win thanks to big innings in each game. Asher F. had a big part of those innings, as he went 4-6 with three RBI and two runs scored between the two games. Keep it up, boys!
Koa 14U vs. MVP Terps West
Game 1: 8-3 loss
The 14U Green Wave played only one game this Sunday. Unfortunately it did not go the way they had planned, as they dropped a tough, close game to the Terps. The hitters had a tough time adjusting to off speed pitches, as this was the first time they had seen any decent ones all season. The defense and pitching were there, though, with Ryan R. playing excellent defense at shortstop and making a couple of great plays, and Grady W., Reece E., and Dylan P. pitching well enough to keep the game manageable. The defense, on the whole, is coming along nicely.
Koa JV vs. NFC Knights JV
Game 1: 18-10 loss
Game 2: 9-4 loss
Playing with only nine guys, the JV Green Wave were unable to win on Sunday, giving up an early lead in game one and not being able to hold on in game two, as walks and errors did the team in. That said, the boys showed lots of resiliency, with many players playing out of position for large chunks of the game. Ari F. pitched, caught, and played shortstop during both games. He even stepped up and caught an entire game after pitching multiple innings in a long first game. Although he was tired, he never complained and showed a lot of grit and toughness. Sam S. pitched well in game two statistically, but it was his attitude and composure that made the difference. Sam’s getting better every week, and his willingness to improve his demeanor on the mound is one of the main reasons why.
