First up….Coach Gloria!
When did you start playing Field Hockey?
I started playing field hockey when I was 5 years old when we learned to play in gym class. We started with plastic field hockey sticks and a wiffle ball!
Did you play in college?
I played all four years at Syracuse University. I started off playing left back, because that was the only available starting position after a senior graduated. I wanted to be a starter on the team, so I knew that I needed to train for and play defense! During my senior year, I was the starting center forward! Throughout my college career, I learned the importance of being able to play every position. Go Orange!
Why did you decide to start coaching?
After playing in college, I realized that I wanted to share the lessons and skills that I learned, with all of the kids who love the sport as much as I do!
How long have you been coaching with Koa?
I have been coaching with Koa since April 2014. I am currently the coach of the Koa u16 Club Teams, as well as one of the many amazing coaches in our Rec League program.
What is your favorite coaching memory?
I don’t have one specific memory, but my favorite part of coaching is when a player finally gets a skill that they never thought they could get. A player who works hard and puts in the extra hours and effort, and then finally accomplishes that skill or goal…those are the moments that I always remember!
What is one piece of advice that you would give to an aspiring field hockey player?
Never say never, and more importantly, don’t be afraid to try new things! I would also emphasize the importance of learning and being open to playing different positions on the field. You never know what starting position it could eventually lead too!
What do you do for fun when you’re not coaching?
Coaching field hockey! And…I guess watching movies!
What is one Coach Gloria Fun Fact that most people don’t know about you?
When I was 8 years old, I wanted to be the Pope when I grew up!
