September 2019 Newsletter!
This month we had the opportunity to send Casey, Koa’s Director of Operations, to the Project Play on September 17th and 18th in Detroit, Michigan. The world-renowned Aspen Institute has held the Project Play Summit at the Newseum in Washington, DC for the past 3 years. Our Founder & CEO Tony Korson was a panelist at the Summit two years ago. Here are some takeaways from Casey’s experience at the Summit:
The theme of the conference was “Don’t Retire Kid!” ~70% are quitting sports by 12 years old.
-I sat in a number of workshops hosted by professional athletes, youth athletes, college coaches, sports psychologist, and many other professionals.
-The number one reason kids are retiring at such a young age is that the game is no longer fun!
Additional Factors why kids are quitting:
- Parents fight with other parents,
- Parents arguing with coaches and officials
- The pressure to practice and play 7 days a week
- and can no longer enjoy the sport they are playing.
-Other topics discussed at the conference were encouraging sports sampling, how to put kids ideas into action, how to coach girls and reintroducing free play.
